H. C. Andrews: mystery solved

H. C. Andrews was the author, artist and publisher of Coloured engravings of heaths (1794-1830) and The heathery (1805-1828), which illustrated numerous species of Erica, especially the so-called Cape heaths.

Andrews never used his second name in print, and many authors have assumed it was Charles. This has been proved to be incorrect – he was Henry Cranke Andrews.

For details and discussion of Andrews’s name, see E. C. Nelson, “Henry C. Andrews, Botanical Artist and Publisher” in Notes and queries 64, part 1, March 2017.
